Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His parents were Mallie and Jerry Robinson. When he was 6 months old, his father, Jerry, left the family to go to Texas. He promised he would write and send money, but after he left, he never talked to the family again. When Jackie was 1 year old, his mother, 4 siblings, and him moved to Pasadena, California. For there first two years in California, they lived in a small, 3 room apartment. Once Mallie had saved enough money, they moved to Pepper Street, in an all white neighborhood. A lot of their neighbors didn’t like them living on Pepper Street. They even signed a petition to make them move but it was denied.
Through all of Jackie’s childhood he would spend his afternoons and weekends watching his older brother, Mack, play sports with his friends. One day, they were playing baseball and they needed one more player. So, they decided to let Jackie play.
He was a very good baseball player so he decided to play baseball at MuirTechnical High School, along with basketball, football, and track. He was good enough to play in college but his family didn’t have enough money to send him to a good college.
